Disney+ restores HDR10 on selected devices
Disney+ is streaming HDR10 again on selected devices. Its return uses VP9-2, leaving many TVs and consoles unsupported.
Disney+ is offering HDR10 again on selected devices. The streaming service uses VP9-2, so access to the format also depends on device support.
Support remains limited
According to the available details, HDR10 works on some Fire TV devices, Android TV and Google TV sets from Philips, Sony and TCL, and Hisense TVs running VIDAA from 2019 onward. Devices listed as unsupported include Samsung TVs with Tizen, Panasonic models with My Home Screen, Nvidia Shield TV, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The report lists LG webOS TVs from 2020 onward, while also noting exceptions.
The restrictions stem from a patent and licensing dispute with InterDigital. Disney had previously removed 4K and HDR from the service; 4K returned on some devices after a switch from HEVC to VP9. Further legal action has been threatened, which could put availability under renewed pressure.
Why it matters
For IPTV player and streaming service users, picture quality depends not only on the subscription but also on supported codecs and specific devices. HDR10 on Disney+ is currently not available consistently across platforms.
Why it matters
Disney+ subscribers with premium plans may not get the expected HDR picture on their devices. VP9-2 support is limited, and the article reports exceptions even among compatible LG TVs.
