How to choose the right device

Fire TV: a new generation can change app access

Amazon says the second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K and the 4K Plus run Fire OS 8. Select and the third-generation 4K model use Vega OS. Amazon has separate development paths for these systems. When choosing a device, check your app on the exact model, even if you already own a Fire TV. A Fire OS download does not confirm Vega support. The Fire TV guide explains how to identify the model and install apps.

Apple TV: compare generation and features separately

The second-generation Apple TV 4K already has Ethernet. In the third generation, the 64 GB Wi-Fi model lacks the port, while the 128 GB model has it built in. If you are upgrading from an older Apple TV with LAN, check the full model name. The two third-generation versions are not different generations. Also check for “4K”: an older Apple TV without that label may be a very different device.

Google TV: check the TV app, not the phone app

The Google TV Streamer has Android TV OS, 32 GB of storage and Gigabit Ethernet. It may suit a wired setup and Android TV apps. Find the app in the TV catalog and check that it works with a remote. A smartphone version does not establish that a suitable TV app exists. The Android TV guide can help with setup.

Before buying: identify a specific bottleneck

Note your two most important apps, the exact model you own and how it connects to the TV. If playback stutters, compare the same channel over Wi-Fi and, where possible, LAN. A box cannot fix a faulty playlist. Check menu navigation, importing and playback separately. The buffering diagnosis walks you through this test. If your TV already runs suitable apps reliably, you may not need another device.

Include accessories and app costs

Add up the device, suitable cables or adapters, app purchases and ongoing subscriptions. Google specifies a separate HDMI 2.1 cable; Apple also does not include an HDMI cable with the third-generation 4K models. Compare a stick plus adapter with a box that has built-in LAN as complete setups. The box buying guide covers the purchase and total cost; the player comparison covers software choices.

Our take on each model

Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025)

Plus and Select both include 4K in the name, but use different operating systems. If an app you need lists Fire OS only, Plus is the better fit of these two. Still check compatibility for the specific device: an Android foundation does not confirm support for any individual app.

Accessories: Plan for an additional Ethernet adapter if you need a wired connection.

Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025)

Select is not an interchangeable Fire OS stick. Start by searching for the app on this exact device before following a guide. An APK guide for Plus does not establish an installation path here. If your everyday apps are available, Select may still suit your TV setup.

Accessories: Check the compatible Amazon Ethernet adapter if you need a wired connection.

Fire TV Stick 4K (2. Gen., 2023)

If your apps work on the second generation, moving to the third is not just a hardware swap: the operating system changes to Vega OS. First check whether your apps are offered there. The same storage capacity and Wi-Fi standard alone are not enough reason to switch.

Accessories: Reuse an existing adapter only after confirming compatibility.

Fire TV Stick 4K (3. Gen., 2026)

According to Amazon, the third-generation 4K model uses Vega OS 2.0. Treat your existing Fire OS app list as a checklist to verify, rather than a package that carries over. A newer release year says nothing about your channel-switching times or whether your playlist app is available.

Accessories: Check for an Ethernet adapter compatible with this model if you need a wired connection.

Apple TV 4K (3. Gen., Wi-Fi)

This model fits if you use Apple TV over Wi-Fi and 64 GB is enough for your apps. It has no Ethernet port. If a wired connection is required, choose the Ethernet version from the same generation and check the model number in the listing.

Accessories: HDMI cable sold separately; no built-in LAN port.

Apple TV 4K (3. Gen., Wi-Fi + Ethernet)

This third-generation version includes a built-in Gigabit port and 128 GB of storage. That is a specific equipment reason to choose it. More storage does not prove faster playback; a wired connection mainly helps rule out an unstable Wi-Fi link during troubleshooting.

Accessories: HDMI cable sold separately; plan for an Ethernet cable for LAN.

Sources: Apple: identify generations and model numbers · Apple: technical specifications for the third-generation 4K model · Apple: download apps from the App Store on Apple TV

Apple TV 4K (2. Gen., 2021)

The second-generation 4K model already has Gigabit Ethernet. Switching to the third-generation Wi-Fi version would lose that port. Compare features and available capacity before the release year. If your tvOS apps and controls work for you today, a higher generation number alone is not a reason to replace it.

Accessories: For used listings, check whether the cables and remote are included.

Google TV Streamer (4K)

The Streamer combines the Android TV app path with a built-in Gigabit port. For a home with an existing wired connection, that is more convenient than adding an adapter to a stick. Check your desired app in the TV catalog: a listing for Android phones alone does not confirm a TV interface or remote control support.

Accessories: A certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required separately.

Device selection FAQs

Is Apple TV a good choice?

Apple TV 4K may suit you if the apps you need are available for tvOS and you want a separate streaming box. First check whether your current TV already runs those apps well. If LAN matters, choose the Wi-Fi + Ethernet version of the third-generation 4K model. This refers to the Apple TV device; a subscription to a TV service is a separate decision.

Who should consider a Fire TV Stick?

A Fire TV Stick may suit you if you want a compact device for apps offered on that specific model. Check the operating system before buying: Fire OS and Vega OS have different app catalogs. If you need a wired connection, include a compatible Ethernet adapter. A smart TV that already meets your needs may make extra hardware unnecessary.

Can you watch regular TV on Apple TV?

You can watch live TV through a compatible tvOS app that offers live channels. Depending on the app and service, you may need your own account or an authorized source. The Apple TV device itself does not provide TV channels. Check the TV app you want and its terms before buying the hardware.

Sources and limitations

Checked 2026-10-26: official specifications and installation documentation. This is a limited selection, not a complete market survey. We did not test these eight devices and versions ourselves under the same conditions. We therefore have no original channel-switching times, performance scores or overall winners. Our assessments are editorial conclusions based on operating systems, connections and app access.

App availability depends on the device, region, firmware and minimum version. Check the current store and manufacturer support before buying. Prices, availability and update commitments are not tracked here continuously. A player or streaming device does not include channels; playback requires an authorized source or a suitable TV app.
