YouTube plans to introduce AV2 streams on the web in early 2027. The codec is intended to deliver around 30% greater compression efficiency than AV1. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are also exploring AV2, but have not announced a launch date for their services.
At comparable picture quality, AV2 could reduce the required bitrate. The actual effect depends on the video content and encoding settings. Streaming services could also use the efficiency to offer better picture quality at a similar bitrate.
Device support remains essential
The standard was published in June 2026. Playback requires AV2 decoding support from browsers, apps and devices, as well as the streaming service. A demonstration in Google Chrome does not establish support across all devices.
For IPTV player and streaming service users, any benefit will depend on the service offering AV2 and the playback device supporting the codec. Until then, the announcement alone does not change everyday streaming.
Why it matters
AV2 could reduce data use or improve picture quality on supported services and devices. For IPTV player users, that requires both the streaming service and the playback chain to support the codec; so far, only YouTube’s web launch has a stated timeframe.
