Apple TV 4K third generation: Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Ethernet?

These two Apple TV models belong to the same 2022 third-generation 4K lineup. The features differ: A2737 has 64 GB and Wi-Fi, while A2843 has 128 GB and built-in Gigabit Ethernet. For your choice, first decide whether the TV location needs a wired connection.

Which device is right for you?

If Ethernet is part of your setup, choose the Wi-Fi + Ethernet version in this generation. The 64 GB Wi-Fi version may fit if your Wi-Fi connection is suitable. Both use tvOS; more storage does not prove faster playback in your particular app.

Wi-Fi with 64 GB: if Wi-Fi suits your setup

The Wi-Fi version may suit you if you do not need built-in LAN and its capacity is enough for your apps. Check your planned tvOS apps in the Apple TV App Store. A listing that says third generation does not guarantee an Ethernet port.

128 GB with Ethernet: if you plan to plug in a cable

A2843 may suit you if you want to connect the box directly by Ethernet. The extra storage is capacity, not a measured speed advantage. Check the full model name in listings and include HDMI and, if needed, Ethernet cables in your setup.

Our takeThis model fits if you use Apple TV over Wi-Fi and 64 GB is enough for your apps. It has no Ethernet port. If a wired connection is required, choose the Ethernet version from the same generation and check the model number in the listing. This third-generation version includes a built-in Gigabit port and 128 GB of storage. That is a specific equipment reason to choose it. More storage does not prove faster playback; a wired connection mainly helps rule out an unstable Wi-Fi link during troubleshooting.

A switch within the same generation needs a specific reason

If you already own the Wi-Fi model and your apps work reliably over Wi-Fi, 128 GB alone does not establish faster playback. Conversely, Ethernet is a clear feature difference if you want a wired connection. Distinguish a network issue from a faulty source: Ethernet removes Wi-Fi from the comparison, but does not confirm a playlist or TV app is error-free.

Check the model number and included items before buying

A2737 identifies the 64 GB Wi-Fi model; A2843 is the 128 GB version with Ethernet. The shared Apple TV 4K name and generation are not enough to tell them apart. Apple specifies that an HDMI cable is required separately for the third generation. For used devices, also check for the remote and included cables so you compare complete setups.

Before you buy

  1. Distinguish A2737 (Wi-Fi) from A2843 (Wi-Fi + Ethernet).
  2. Decide whether Wi-Fi is enough at the installation location.
  3. Check required tvOS apps and their minimum versions.
  4. Plan for an HDMI cable and, for LAN, an Ethernet cable.
