A Smart TV often needs no extra stick to play official livestreams or your own permitted playlist. But “Smart TV” does not describe one shared app system. Samsung uses Tizen; LG uses webOS. Android TV guides and Google Play do not apply to these systems. Whether a specific app is available also depends on the model, software version, country and store. This guide starts with safely identifying your TV, then takes you through the relevant app store, and only after that covers setup. Finding an app on the TV is better evidence than a generic list claiming it “works on all Samsung and LG TVs.” We have not run our own test fleet covering every model year, so this overview distinguishes documented installation routes from checks you can make on the device itself.

Find the brand, model year and region

Look in the Settings menu for the full model code and installed software. A label on the TV or purchase receipt may help, but retail names are often too broad. For your private notes, record the brand, model code, approximate year, software version and selected service country. Do not publish the serial number or a photo showing an account that is signed in. If the app you want is missing, these details are much more useful to support than “my Smart TV is new.” A software update may change the store; follow the manufacturer’s instructions, then search for the app again.

Next, decide whether you want an official TV service or want to manage your own M3U/XMLTV source in a player. Official services usually have their own app and do not need a separate playlist. A player app may organize channels, but it does not provide channels or rights to use them. For free, legal channels, the official livestream overview may be the shorter route. If you already have M3U data, the M3U and EPG guide walks through setup.

Samsung: find and install apps in Smart Hub

Samsung describes the route on current devices through Smart Hub and the Apps tab. Open search, enter the app’s full name and check the publisher and device description. Select Install, then launch the app using “Open.” According to Samsung Support, an internet connection and Samsung Account are required to install apps. Which standard apps are preinstalled can vary by model and region. Finding an entry in Google Play on your phone does not prove it is available on a Samsung TV.

If an app is missing from the Apps section, Samsung explicitly says you cannot simply install it on the TV from another app store such as Google Play. If an app is missing, first check the spelling and region, then the firmware and supported model range on the app’s official page. Do not change the service country just to force access to a different store region: that can affect other apps and terms of use. If support is unclear, contact the app provider with your model code and country. Consider a streaming stick only if the app you need is genuinely unavailable for your TV.

What you should see on screen: The app has its own detail page in Samsung Apps with a publisher and Install button. After launch, it shows its own sign-in or import screen. If there are no channels after installation, that is normal for a player app until you add a permitted source. If a specific app is not in the store, record “not found on model X in region Y on date Z” instead of claiming “it never works on Samsung.”

LG: check the webOS version and LG Content Store

LG’s documented route is to press the Home button, open LG Content Store or the app area, search for the app and open its installation page. LG Germany notes that categories and available apps can vary by country and service status. On newer webOS versions the interface may look different or use a different layout, so follow the labels visible on your own TV instead of copying an old screenshot blindly. Check the publisher and pricing information before installing, too.

If the store or app is missing, check the network, software and selected LG service country. LG’s help page explains different menu routes for webOS 5 and older, webOS 6 and newer versions. Storage space may also be a constraint. Do not rush to delete other apps that contain saved sign-ins. According to LG, a USB stick with an app from another LG TV does not replace the standard installation route. The same applies on LG: an Android APK tutorial is not a webOS guide.

What you should see on screen: The app appears in the LG app area with an Install or Open option. If you cannot find it, note your webOS version, model and region. A search engine may show a store page for another country; availability on the actual device is what matters. On very old models, an external stick may be more economical than extended troubleshooting, but check the TV first.

Document compatibility honestly

A maintained table should say more than “Samsung: yes” or “LG: yes.” A useful record includes the model code, model year, region, software version, app version, check date and result. Until an entry has been tested on the actual TV, its status should remain “check the store on the device.” For the examples below, the manufacturers document the general installation route; that does not confirm every IPTV player app on every model year.

LG with webOS 6 or laterwebOSHome → Apps / LG Content StoreCheck service country and app on the TV
LG with webOS 5 or earlierOlder webOS versionLG Content Store; menus may differCheck manufacturer requirements and store on the TV

This overview avoids an invented list of compatible apps. Add a check date for a particular player only after the model, region and app have actually been tested together. If you make a decision after testing it yourself, record those details for future updates. An app may disappear if its provider stops maintaining older operating systems; past availability is no permanent guarantee.

Set up a playlist or an official service

After installing the app, distinguish between its input methods. An official TV app asks for the service account and, after sign-in, shows the channels included in the plan. A player app asks for an M3U file, playlist URL or a supported login format. Enter only details you are authorized to use. Check each character carefully with the remote, especially the protocol, slashes and characters that are easy to confuse. Give the list a neutral name and keep access details out of screenshots. Do not ask for a “free code” in comments or messaging groups.

When the channel list appears, test one familiar channel first, then check the program guide. Channels are present but the EPG is empty? The issue may be the XMLTV source, update or channel mapping; the EPG troubleshooting guide and EPG checker can help. Is the stream stuttering? Compare the same channel on the TV with another permitted device or a wired connection, where available. The buffering diagnosis separates network, source and player issues step by step. Reinstalling the app is rarely the most informative first test.

When a streaming device can really help

An additional stick or box makes sense if the app you need is not offered for Tizen or webOS, an older TV no longer receives updates, or the interface remains too slow after setup is correct. Then choose a device based on the app and operating system: Android TV, Fire OS, Vega OS and tvOS have different selections. The box comparison includes Ethernet, remote control and accessories. A cheap stick that cannot run the app you need is no bargain. Also check that an HDMI port is free and how the device will get power.

An external player does not automatically change the channel’s picture quality or your subscription plan. If the service supplies only HD, a 4K box will not turn it into a 4K program. If only one channel fails, buying a device may leave the problem untouched. Start by checking the store and source on your existing TV. Decide afterward whether a second device solves a missing installation route or a demonstrated performance limit.

Frequently asked questions about Samsung and LG

Can I install TiviMate directly on Samsung or LG? The official TiviMate app is described for Android TV. Tizen and webOS are different systems; check the relevant TV store for suitable apps or use an external Android TV device. Why is my app missing from the store? The model, operating system version and country can limit the selection. Check official compatibility for that exact combination. Do I need an M3U list for ARD or ZDF? No. Their official browser or app services work without a playlist you create yourself. Should I buy a stick immediately because an app is missing? Only after the manufacturer confirms that the app is unavailable for your TV and there is no suitable alternative. What does EPG mean? It is the electronic program guide; it may arrive as a separate source from the channel list.
