Google is reportedly working on a new generation of the Google TV Streamer. The streaming box is expected to have built-in microphones, presence detection, a faster processor and more than the current 32 GB of storage. No release date or price has been announced.
Voice control and automatic display
Microphones on the top of the device could allow voice commands without using the remote. Presence detection is said to recognize when someone enters the room and turn on the screen, for example to show a Google Photos screensaver, the time or the weather.
The sloped design is expected to remain broadly similar, though the device may become more compact. The remote is also reportedly getting two additional app shortcut buttons alongside YouTube and Netflix. The button for locating the remote is to remain on the back of the box.
What remains unknown
- Google has not announced a launch date or price.
- The reported features and changes are indications of a device in development.
Why it matters
For IPTV player and streaming service users, built-in microphones could enable voice control without the remote, while presence detection could automatically display items such as the time or weather. The reported changes do not establish any change to IPTV apps or their availability.
